Filmhistoriens start dateras 1895 i och med kinematografen, en maskin som kunde projicera bilder tillräckligt snabbt för att skapa en illusion av rörelse. Både möjligheten att skapa film och kapaciteten att projicera den har ända sedan dess legat i händerna på stora bolag och inte på enskilda individer, vilket den till stor del gör än idag.
I och med introducerandet av TV-apparaten på 1950-talet kom film in i människors hem. Filmen var nämligen en mycket populär attraktion som TV-bolagen var villiga att betala dyra rättigheter för att visa. Ungefär två decennium senare utvecklades videobandet (senare helt dominerad av VHS-kassetten), en teknik som gjorde det möjligt att spela in materialet från TV:n.
Det viktigaste för att förstå motiven bakom DVD:n är att filmbolagen aldrig var riktigt nöjda med videobandet. Visserligen innebar tekniken att de kunde släppa sina filmer igen efter att de hade gått på bio, men det innebar också att människor (olagligt) kunde sprida eller till och med läcka deras material. Det slutgiltiga svaret var ett nytt sätt att köpa och spela upp film och TV-serier. Resultatet var DVD-spelaren och den släpptes 1996.
